2026 Hyundai Ioniq 9 AWD EV - Bottom Line Review

REGENT OF CHARGED PARTICLES : Currently, the full-size crossover utility vehicle is the reigning monarch of the American automotive landscape.

To be sure, the internal combustion family SUV competition is intense, and the gas hybrid electric component is fast growing. By contrast, until recently battery electric three-row large family transport has been confined to the luxury market. If the Hyundai Kia Genesis Group has anything to say about it, that nascency will be short lived.

Following two years on the heels of a three-row electric Kia EV9 analog, the 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 9 can now claim the crown as electric flagship of the Korean H brand.

WHAT: 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 9 AWD Performance Limited plug-in battery electric three-row crossover utility vehicle. The brand's EV big Kahuna, cousin to the previously released Kia EV9, shares flagship duties with the petrol Hyundai Palisade. It shares its Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) foundation with other rear drive layout Hyundai/ Kia products such as the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6.

WHAT PROPELS IT:

WHAT (A) STYLING DIFFERENCE(S): Large family hauling duties of the Hyundai Ioniq 9 dictated a far less radically angular sportback shape than the junior Ioniq 5 crossover. The big Hyundai EV forgoes the origami facets of cousin Kia EV9, to adopt a radically raked roof silhouette, with nearly art-deco streamlined edges.

Borrowed from the avant garde Kona compact, are a Cyclopean front clip, with smooth , wrap around upper lateral light bar, splitting corner LED DRL / directionals, middle fascia corner vertical headlamp array and the three-quarter hexagon wheel arches.

The gradually C to D pillar panel rise shows off the sloped roof. A mid second Row door vertical crease meet the widened rear quarter panels. Piano black lower door accenting rises to score the wheel arches, while the bottom front valance and rear diffuser consist of a matter metallic skid plate look.

Should there be any question of contemporary Range Rover imitation, the flattery lies in the rising lower rear quarters to tall glass, slightly convex lifgate.

• Slim, sail panel mounted wing mirrors look chic, but aren't up to large vehicle outward visibility snuff
• Power ejecting / retracting door handles have been included (for now)
• +1 Better Liftgate collision protection than on Kia EV9, owing to protruding bumper cover

Letter "H" Signature Lighting: While the EV9 is stricken by vertical lightning bolts, no modern Hyundai is worth its name without letter "H" arrayed directional Parametric LEDs. In the Ioniq 9, the pixelated formations are slimmer in front, spanned by a slim character light bar. The headlight array is stacked at the middle front corners. In back, variable color light emitting diodes form a less subtle trellis doubling-up for "H's" at the sub-backlight sides.

WHY: Plus Three to Second Wave of fully charged particles driving, is a flagship three-row SUV

Terrain Modes adjust throttle response, F:R torque split, traction & hill hold controls, and descent braking programmed for Snow, Mud, Sand conditions.

HOW ROADWORTHY: The 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 9 Performance SUV dispatches its plentiful power with an instantly gratifying linearity inherent to battery electrics. While sport drive mode releases more power, the throttle is responsive without being hyper sensitive.

Flipping the right dorsal steering wheel paddle three times from the least regenerative slowing simulates a traditional transmission downshift. Experienced EV drivers will likely stick with I[ntelligent]-Pedal single pedal driving, which will have the added benefit of increased friction brake wear part longevity.

Low speed alert whine goes gentle on pedestrians. Subtle motor whirring, featuring selectable synthetic amplification, is best left on the lowest volume, leaving a placid cabin, interrupted by some occasional panel rattle.

• Three (3) drive modes = Eco, Normal, Sport: the latter for testing occupant G-Force tolerance.
• Variable Regenerative Slowing: 3 levels, with 3 being most aggressive, accessible via steering wheel dorsal paddles
• One pedal driving: "I-Pedal" about the easiest to master.
• Drive actuation = twist to shift steering column lower right side stalk, includes start button

Hyundai chassis engineering in Russelsheim, Germany dials a subtly kinder suspension tune into the Ioniq 9 Performance than do their Kia EV9 counterparts. The massive low mounted battery mass makes for a planted attitude in normal transitions. Softer rebound jounce is penalized only by slightly lazier turn-in, despite precisely the same Hankook ION Evo rubber. As in the EV9, the Ioniq 9 clues little road grip.

Regenerative motor spinning will do most of the slowing, especially in I-Pedal mode, but when called to action the pedal offers cottony action. Complementing the ride civility, the 2026 Ioniq 9 is noise averse, owing to the more curved body and more plush cabin finish.

HOW PEOPLE FRIENDLY: Though a Genesis analog is expected shortly, and an even more esoteric finished Calligraphy Design trim ranks higher, the 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 9 Performance Limited AWD is no slouch at a premium cabin execution.

Dashboard and door card print schemes match the welcome displays with concave waveforms. Climate and infotainment controls have been retained in the same intuitive groupings, using tasteful matte metallic buttons set within a restrained amount of piano gloss black bezels. Light open pore woodgrain accents, brushed metal tipped switches, and bezel audio speaker housings impart a classier rendition than the sportier Kia EV9.

Dueling Blended Big Screens: Curved, contiguous, landscape dual 12.3 TFT instrument and touch LCD infotainment displays have the acreage to disseminate power, charge/ discharge, maps, road signs, ADAS systems, media & comm in a story book way. The BlueLink + infortainment screen contains the expected corporate swipe menu screens to touch set up, with absolutely logical menu flow. Variable size font script is welcome. MFI displays, usefully including ADAS settings, are selected via a ribbed metallic steering wheel spoke toggle.
