2026 Mazda CX-50 Hybrid - Cliff's Ride Review Notes
IF YOU CAN'T BEAT 'EM, BORROW
Were pop female artist Carly Simon to soulfully croon about the pent up American demand for gas electric hybrid vehicles, the tune would be "Anticipation." Anticipating the competition developing proprietary hybrid drives, "Nobody Does It Better" than automotive giant Toyota, with nearly three decades of petrol battery electrics under the bonnet.
As volume enthusiast Japanese automaker, Mazda, awaits it's own conventional battery electric supplement, the Hiroshima firm went hat in hand to its Toyoda City investor for a stop-gap system. Thus, the first logical Zoom Zoom cardiac transplant of a Hybrid Synergy E-Four, on the "Discovery" line at the joint venture Huntsville, Alabama plant, was given to the 2025 Mazda CX-50 Hybrid. Roadblazing.com contributor, Cliff Leppke, recently applied Pilotis on the pedals of a 2026 Mazda CX-50 Hybrid Premium Plus to report on enthusiast efficiency.

WHAT CLIFF LIKES ABOUT THE 2026 MAZDA CX-50 HYBRID AWD
Driving It :
Carefully advertised as the Mazda's first conventional petrol + battery electric application in North America, the Mazda CX-50 Hybrid powertrain / drivetrain suite comes directly from the Toyota's Hybrid Synergy E-Four parts bin. The Atkinson cycle four cylinder whips up some gritty sounds. While the CVT transaxle can replicate soft shifts, there is that characteristic engine surging accompanied by motion lag. Getting underway imparts tentativeness, ambling around is sonambulant, and motorway passing requires planning.
Frigid winter weather doesn't do any battery propulsion favors, explaining the sub-par fuel consumption of the loaned 2026 CX-50 Hybrid for testing. When front end traction was challenged by snow packed roads, electric rear wheel activation was brief. It is not as if the equipped all-season rubber would optimize traction. Mazda doesn't bother with a Toyota power flow display in their proprietary media screen.
On by-ways, the 2026 Mazda CX-50 Hybrid AWD markets greater athleticism in personality compared to the genteel CX-5. Brisk steering inputs are rewarded with linear if not aggressive turn-in. Pitch and body motions are well checked until the rear torsion beam geometry limits are tested. Yet, when lumpy pavement is encountered, stiff springing and damping betray the semi-independent rear end with sharp impacts and jostling. For a hybrid machine, the transition from regenerative to mechanical slowing approaches imperceptible, with a nicely firmed up pedal.

Using It:
Labeling the Mazda CX-50 Hybrid as a compact CUV can be misleading as the space is generous for four adults (plus a kid), despite losing some 2nd Row legroom from the non-hybrid CX-50 for the under-seat traction battery.
Should that foursome be traveling to distant destinations, the low liftover, wide aperture cargo bay, accessed by power liftgate, will easily tote roll-aboards for each. Towing capacity is 1500 pounds.

Occupying It :
When the Mazda CX-50 launched out of Tuscaloosa, Alabama for 2023, it stood as the low slung, outdoor adventure sportwagon alternative to the relatively staid CX-5. Some Mazda tradition was retained in the guise of the analog instrumentation and the remote command knob operated center dash top landscape tablet media display.
Critically, more esoteric switchgear finish & grouping, developed for the related Mazda CX-30, populates the cockpit. Dashboard face and upper door cards have been trimmed in tuck seam leatherette, embellished with to contrasting hanging stitching. Front seating is a wider, split seam variant of the amply padded sport buckets found in the CX-30, incorporating cooling in addition to heating. While rear
Cabin storage boasts a wide first row center bin with clamshell lid, and two device capable lower center stack connected device tray, hinged overhead sunglasses bin, spacious glovebox and accommodating door pockets.

Operating Within It :
Resisting the latest landscape widescreen tablets fad, Mazda CX-50 Hybrid instrumentation is presented in a decidedly Nineties Bavarian premium sport vehicle layout. White-on-black ELD flanked center dial array instruments, set in an "old school" hooded binnacle, resist glare, varying only by drive mode speedo dial color. Chiclet button switches are set in classy arrays, while climate controls are flanked by dual knurled metal temperature knobs.
Mazda understands how to do an attractive, suitably shaped steering wheel in the CX-50 Hybrid, with redundant switches demarcated for intuitive manipulation. Kudos for retention of the good ol' fashioned center console rowed transaxle shift lever.
In the scheme of infotainment regimes, the CX-50 Hybrid's is a senior citizen. MazdaConnect is heavily menu laden. The twist & toggle action of the handsome center console remote Commander knob is stuck with no easy way to jump to simple operations such as radio tuning. Touch operation of the middling resolution 10.25"inch center dash-top landscape display is restricted to Android Auto / CarPlay projection.
Tickling mobile audiophile ears, the CX-50 Hybrid Bose Centerpoint sound system delivers nuanced spatial acoustics with its "Linear" mode. Users have got to love the logic of a knurled volume knob conveniently located on the center console, avoiding any long reach.

WHAT CLIFF ISN'T CRAZY ABOUT WITH THE 2026 MAZDA CX-50 HYBRID AWD
- The Toyota hybrid system doesn't necessarily do justice to the Mazda tradition of refined, responsive powertrains
- An e-CVT which imparts the dreaded rubber-band engine speed to acceleration reaction
- Cold weather fuel economy disappoints
- Torsion beam rear suspension & 19" alloy wheels impart plenty don't play smoothly with road expansion gaps
- Loss of 2nd Row legroom from non-hybrid CX-50
- Some fit & finish wouldn't befit a CX-5 (see lower door cards & cargo bay walls)
- Mazda's native infotainment is one of the last to rely on a remote knob controller, hence laborious scrolling through menus
- Driver's seat right offset yields constrictive positioning
- Cruising & Traffic Support hands-free assist & surround cameras unavailable (exclusive to 2.5 Turbo petrol Premium Plus model)
CLIFF'S TAKE ON THE 2026 MAZDA CX-50 HYBRID AWD vs. the competition:
Honda's CR-V Hybrid will get the powertrain dynamics nod in the segment but trails in fuel economy numbers. The Hyundai Tucson Hybrid (and Kia Sportage Hybrid cousin) muster a snazzier panoramic cluster & media display. Subaru's new Forester Hybrid is armed with off-road creds. While the new Toyota RAV4 scores a next generation Hybrid Synergy system.
