Exclusively jumbo three-row sized and decidedly rectangular shaped, the fifth generation Santa Fe amplifies its namesake's "... suitability for living in measured in habitability and comfort."

WHAT PROPELS IT:

The battery electric hybrid 1.6 turbo inline-four powerplant is the extra cost option over the more potent previously tested turbocharged 2.5L Santa Fe. This set-up is similarly a standard transverse front drive layout, optionally equipped with viscous clutch all-wheel drive. Automatic transaxle gear count drops from eight to six speeds.

The tested unit was optioned with viscous center clutch all-wheel drive, featuring the latest corporate Terrain Modes.

WHAT (A) STYLING DIFFERENCE: When the fifth series Santa Fe launched in 2024, the clean sheet design embraced cutting edge cubism and revived the three-row configuration (missing in the 4th generation SF) as standard. Only the lower right side liftgate "Hybrid" emblem exists for the purposes of distinguishing the battery electric assisted models from the more potent 2.5L turbo versions.

HOW ROADWORTHY:

The battery electric hybrid assisted small displacement turbo petrol straight-four mill is same as in the related Kia Sorento Hybrid. Held back in briskness by lower net power and a traction battery, the 2026 Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid AWD acquits itself as an agreeably sedate family hauler. The planetary torque converter transaxle locks smoothly but, despite all the available dorsal steering wheel shift paddling, prefers a frugal life of early upshifts. Consequently, the propulsion becomes taxed under strain.

The latest generation Santa Fe's longer wheelbase does wonders for dissipating road impact energy. More tautly damped than others of the ilk, the overall ride quality remains supple sans much flint. Less outright acceleration than its larger turbocharged engine sibling means the Hybrid relies far less on the rearwards shift of all-wheel drive torque to mitigate understeer. The helm might spin with gratifying speed, but amplified road numbness hinders sharper turn-in. Changing from regenerative to brake slowing is a bit lazy, making the lazy initial bite of the large brakes all the more stark.

HOW BIG/ LITTLE: Given the growing square footage of the compact class, the 2026 Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid embraces large mid-size crossover utility status. Rows 1 and two handle either four or five comfortably, while the third bench isn't too bad for two early adolescents. For those incapable of being pinched during their road travel there is always the full-size Hyundai Palisade.

HOW PEOPLE FRIENDLY:  The 2026 Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid continues to boast the contiguous panoramic display array it debuted in the petrol-only model, set apart by trip meter and infotainment hybrid energy displays. The slightly concave, wide OLED "uni-panel" cuts down switchgear, offers improved systems monitoring, and satiates any sport's bar patron's mien for screens. Unfortunately, there remains the display "Bermuda Triangle," blocked by the inboard side of the steering wheel rim.

The slimmer depth dashboard face offers improved outward visibility. Climate ducts are cleverly spaced out within the triple tandem lateral metallic banding. A steering wheel stalk twist action transmission shift selector is more intuitive push buttons, while liberating center console space for two wireless device inductive charging pads.

Simulated repurposed wood grain and matte metallic metallic appliques emulate haute decor. Organically shaped buttons in cabin matching color, knurled aluminum switch tips, smooth action cabin apertures, impressive panel pebbling and seam fit all deserve prestige recognition.
